The story so far

Finally leaving the living room!

GlassesOnline was started by Kevin Reece after his wife was quoted $300 for a pair of glasses. Thinking $300 was ridiculously expensive, and having no luck finding a cheaper alternative, he decided to look into how glasses were made.

After some extensive research, he discovered that the high prices were due to the big profit margins added by the shops – which can be up to 1000%. Kevin then realised that he would be able to make the same pair for 70% less than the shops...

Beginning from the spare room, Kevin quit his job as an IT Account Manager to work full time on developing GlassesOnline. He sold his flat and used his savings to buy stock and get the website together.

Our brief stint in the
Edgecliff office

In February 2006, GlassesOnline opened its virtual doors. To get the word out, leaflets were distributed around the Sydney area and Kevin enlisted the help of friends to stand outside railway stations in the early morning to hand out flyers (for which they are still awaiting payment!).

The spare room spilled into the living room, and then it was time to move the company into its first office, in Edgecliff NSW. Although spacious initially, room quickly ran out and it was time to move again to a new, bigger office in Crows Nest.

More space! Unpacking in our new (second) office

GlassesOnline soon attracted the attention of the big corporates who controlled the industry. Although customers loved paying sensible prices for their glasses, the big optical groups had their feathers ruffled by GlassesOnline selling the same glasses for a fraction of their prices. Despite being on the end of some dirty tricks, the company stood firm and now has thousands of happy customers across Australia.

GlassesOnline is set to accelerate its growth and continue innovating in the eyewear market.
